No online CET this year

In a welcome relief to second pre-university students, the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) will not conduct Common Entrance Test (CET) 2019 online this year.

Higher Education Minister G.T. Deve Gowda had on January 9 stated that there was a plan to conduct CET 2019 online; however, he backtracked on Thursday, saying it could not be rolled out and cited technical reasons. “Our department officials are still making preparations for the same, so it may not be feasible for the upcoming exam,” he said.

However, the Minister stated that a meeting on January 19 with KEA would help them plan logistics to make sure that the other examinations for recruitment go online from this year.

In all likelihood, CET would be conducted online in 2020.

Students preparing for the entrance test for admission into engineering, agriculture, AYUSH, and several other courses for the 2019–2020 academic year are relieved as the examination is likely to be scheduled in the next five months.

With initial reports of a possible change in format, students had complained that they had not been given mock tests, while college authorities had pointed out that many of the examination centres did not have Internet facility.

Sujatha S., a second pre-university student who plans to write CET 2019 said: “It will be very difficult for rural students to attempt the test as they do not have access to computers to take up mock tests.”
